Social History of Subjectivity: A Dialogue Between Literature and Sociology in the Experience of Being a Woman in Modernity

The experience of being a woman in the emerging contexts of modernity is crucial for a comprehensive reading of the modern Social History of the West. A dialectical approach is proposed to understand the complexity of subjectivity and the modern power dynamics that shape it. The sources for this analysis are hybrid: women’s written literature in the 19th century, sociology, and feminist criticism. The point is to explore the essential dialogue between the social contract and the sexual contract. Against this backdrop, women’s written literature serves as a driving force for the reflexive redefinition of the female experience, generating new conceptual frameworks for understanding contemporary social reality and its processes of social construction
