Abstract

Throughout the nineteenth century and much of the twentieth century, the Spanish sound landscape was conditioned by Catholicism. The bell towers became an omnipresent reality in the past everyday life. Therefore the aim of this work is to develop an approach to understanding the place of bells in contemporary culture. The bells were active in the conflict between the clerical and the anticlerical, as they formed a solid identity in the disputed national identity.
