Abstract

Twentytwo years before the atmospheric pressure was discovered by the Italian physicist Evangelista Torricelli in 1643, his famous experiment was anticipated by the Inquisition of Logroño. It occured during the case against a Basque woman in 1621. She was tried for having consulted a nun (freila) and healer of her own village, Anteiglesia de Arrigoiaga (near Bilbao), about the accident of a little girl she was tending. She wanted to know whether or not the bruises the girl had incurred in her face from falling on a staircase were infected.
