Abstract

This article’s objective is to show the progress made in documentary, archeological and direct sources research about the works of fortification in Pirineos’ region. Starting with a brief synthesis of status, then the two main development phases of the project are described and differentiated, through the analysis of the construction works in Valle de Baztan and Auritz/Burguete and Orreaga/Roncesvalles areas. A second line of analysis is based on the socioeconomic impact of the construction and the consequences of the border situation, centered in the Auritz/Burguete area, with special focus on documentation from Archivo General Militar de Ávila and Archivo Municipal de Auritz/Burguete.
